Eastern Highlands

Eastern Highlands

This beautiful part of Zimbabwe includes three distinct mountain areas. All are paradises with waterfalls, streams, rich vegetation and wild life, and each is subtly different. A variety of hotels, lodges and cottages are available. The Nyanga Mountains stretch 60 km north of Juliasdale. Zimbabwe’s highest location is here. Mount Nyangani with an altitude of 2592 metres. Picturesque Nyangombe Falls tumbling over the rocks into a pool are a popular family attraction.

The spectacular Mtarazi Falls plunge 762 metres down the almost sheer Honde Escarpment into the tropical valley below. Other breathtaking sights include World’s View with Lake Connemara and the enormous densely wooded Pungwe Gorge. South of Nyanga, through the Penhalonga valley, the road rises over Christmas Pass. Below, nestling in a wooded cradle of granite mountains, lies the historic and attractive city of Mutare. Drive through the well planned leafy avenues to a road which winds up into the misty Vumba Mountains where the highest point at 1908 metres is Castle Beacon. There are thick heavily treed evergreen hardwood forests and mountain streams.
