On the edge of the famous Hwange National Park on a private concession that boasts stunning views of the dried riverbed named the ‘Dete Vlei’, stands a rustic eco lodge within the pristine Teak and Mopani forest called Sable Sands. Sable Sands has 16 traditionally thatched ‘rondavels’ with en suite bathroom, making your lodge the perfect blend of ancient culture, nature and modern convenience.
The lodge is owner managed and has become best known for the personal touch evident in the surroundings and service as well as the genuine warmth of the enthusiastic owners and hospitality team who all make you feel right at home.
Situated on a forestry concession, the lodge harvests dead wood for cooking and heating water. A generator is run in the evening for guests to charge their cameras, ipads etc and after the generator makes way for the nocturnal sounds of the wild African bush, there are solar lamps in the rooms for light.
This forest home also has a sparkling swimming pool for those hot African days and a tree house to relax in and breathe in the pure untainted air. There is also a large outdoor fire pit where guests can have dinner under the stars with a glowing red campfire blazing beside them.
In the main gazebo there is the dining area, lounge, library and bar all overlooking the waterhole in the Dete Vlei which is frequented by a host of wildlife visitors. You have the exciting opportunity to see sable antelope, zebra and thirsty herds of elephant and buffalo, and if you are really lucky you might even spot a lion, cheetah, painted dog, jackal and more. The vlei is also renowned for its incredible bird population of no less than 350 different species.
